Electronica artist Moby returns with an album called Last Night, a title that can be interpreted as either being nostalgic or with a sense of finality. In some ways, the album’s songs contain a mix of both nostalgia and completion. Moby has said that with Last Night, he tried “to take 25 years of going out in NYC and condens[e] it into a 65-minute record. It's also trying to condense an eight-hour night into just over an hour of music.” A few of the songs indicate an end to something as well, such as the title of “Degenerates” and its ending music, which has a somber, ethereal feel to it. Standout tracks include the opening number, “Ooh Yeah,” “Sweet Apocalypse” and “Disco Lies,” one of the more rhythmically upbeat tracks of the album. As in electronica music in general, some of the lyrics and sound effects used on Last Night get repeated several times in a song. The most irritating example of this is with the vocals on “Everyday It’s 1989.” Fifteen tracks are on the album, the last one being a hidden track. Overall, Last Night has a fairly mellow vibe and if you like CDs by big name artists, then this effort by Moby will probably go into your collection.
