Jorge Albuquerque, Marcus Amorim and Rafael Barata

Revolving Landscapes

Revolving Landscapes is the third album for Rio-based guitarist Marcus Amorim, and the first for his newly formed trio, which includes Jorge Albuquerque on bass and Rafael Barata on drums. The blending of the Brazilian trio’s individual sounds results in a singular, percussive sound that exemplifies calming playing.

“Waterfall (Correida),” one of the best tracks on the album, is aptly titled; Barata’s use of cymbals and rolling melodies by Amorim and Albuquerque give “Waterfall” a soothing, flowing groove that appears to be the group’s signature sound.

Two other excellent tracks are “Sea Party (Festa No Mar),” which has a casual, natural groove and excellent guitar playing by Amorim, and “10 Years Later (10 Anos DePois),” which is the epitome of romance with its gently comforting melody and swaying groove.

The soothing sounds of Revolving Landscapes gives this traditional Brazilian trio an innovative sound: one that is soothing and passionate, modern and traditional. Although the groove that the trio finds is calming, it toes the line of becoming monotonous, especially as it appears to be the default in a number of tracks (“Waterfall (Correida),” “New Landscape (Nova Paisagem),” “Cloudy Day (Dia Nublado)”). However, the sound is excellent, and if a listener is looking for a Brazilian sound that is both relaxing and rich, Revolving Landscapes is the perfect album.
