In Freezerburn, his follow up to Burnside Cadillac, Chris Beirne presents his signature mixture of Americana, bluegrass, and country. A frequent player with The Crabby Grass Boys, Beirne’s musical prowess is unmatched: he excels at vocals, guitar, pedal steel, dobro and harmonica. He is, for all intents and purposes, the bluegrass “Renaissance man,” one who proudly displays his technical and musical abilities.
Beirne starts Freezerburn with a classic Americana track seasoned with country riffs. With creative instrumentation and Beirne’s smooth twang, “Barkeeper’s Friend,” sets the tone for the rest of the laid-back, country-infused album.
Two other excellent tracks on this album are “I Cried When I Had to Leave New Orleans,” a slightly sorrowful tune made uplifting by Beirne’s inventive chord progressions and guitar riffs, and “Sugerfoot Rag,” which opens with terrific riffs, and, with its pulsing bluegrass and country style, it quickly grabs the listener.
Freezerburn is an eclectic mix of Americana, bluegrass, and country, and Beirne easily makes his voice within these three distinct genres. A talented musician, Beirne rides his melodies and grooves, taking them to higher planes of musicality. With catchy lyrics, optimistic grooves, and excellent playing, Freezerburn is a hit.
